Britain, Russia and the Final Struggle for Central Asia History
Jennifer Siegel
IB Tauris 2002 274 pages
Qty
Hardback 1850433712
Published Price £29.50 Sale Price £6.99
'The Great Game' is the name given to the late 19th century Anglo-Russian power struggle in Central Asia and the Caucasus. This study describes the period before and after 1907 when the hostility between the two powers was apparently concluded, with a rapprochement in the face of the German threat. Drawing on previously unseen Russian and British archives, Siegel shows that the 'endgame' of the Anglo-Rusian confrontation was far from cordial and the two countries remained on the brink of war, saved only by the outbreak of the First World War.

History
Jo Fox
Berg 2000 268 pages

In 1936, Goebbels stated that 'a government that controls art will remain for ever', and the German film industry became inextricably linked with National Socialist propaganda. This book is an historical evaluation of the role and image of women in the feature films of the Third Reich. Fox challenges current perceptions of the National Socialist position with regard to women and examines the creation of a female film culture, as well as the 'blurring' of gender distinctions as a result of the war.

Ilorin Slaves and Their Successors History
Ann O'Hear
Rochester University Press 1997 338 pages
Qty
Hardback 1878822861
Published Price £40.00 Our Price £5.99
This is the first study of slavery and its legacy in the Yoruba and incompletely Islamicised periphery of the Sokoto caliphate and of northern Nigeria. It shows the decline of slavery and the emergence of a small-scale peasantry at the end of the nineteenth century, and takes the story into the late-colonial and post-independence periods. Focusing on Ilorin, the city and emirate on the southern fringe of the caliphate, now in Nigeria, it shows how relations between the city elite and the ex-slaves and peasants they controlled have fluctuated during the long process of oppression and reaction.

Lady Eve Balfour (1898-1990) was one of the first women to graduate in agriculture (at Reading University), and her first job was as manager of a war effort farm in Wales in 1918. She later bought New Bells, Haughley, in Suffolk, and soon began to question agricultural methods. The Haughley Research Farms, The Living Soil (1943) and the founding of the Soil Association followed - the dominant concerns in a life that included jazz bands, writing thrillers, yatching, flying and fighting the 'Tithe Wars'.

From Times records and other sources, Slattery has pieced together the details of this remarkable and very dangerous exploit, including the story of how the 180-foot timber wireless mast was built on the British-leased, treeless promontory of Weihaiwei on the China coast.

In September 1932, young Pavlik Morozov's body was found in a Serbian forest, and the legend of the boy martyr who was murdered because he had informed on his father's anti-Soviet activities was born. The story was shamelessly exploited by Stalin's regime, and Comrade Pavlik rapidly took on iconic status. In this brilliant blend of historical and cultural analysis, Catriona Kelly uses previously inaccessible secret archives to unpick this multi-layered myth of a revolutionary boy hero.

Nat Turner in American Memory History
Scot French
Houghton Mifflin 2004 379 pages
Qty
Hardback 0618104488
Published Price $26.00 Sale Price £3.99
The Nat Turner Rebellion in Virginia, 1831, was the bloodiest slave uprising in American history. Described at the time as a 'fanatic preacher' and rebel leader, Nat Turner was caught, tried and executed. This study places the contested history and enduring memory of the Rebellion within the broader context of the black freedom struggle. Examining literature ranging from the so-called Confessions of Nat Turner (published in 1831) to William Styron's 1967 novel of the same name, French charts the evolving image of Nat Turner, the rebellious slave, as an American icon.
