| Country Life's weekly articles on houses and gardens, illustrated by the magazine's outstanding photographers, were an influential force in early 20th century garden design. Here, the magazine's current garden editor draws on its archives to revisit 45 gardens as they were between 1900 and 1930. As well as the parterres, topiary and labour-intensive flights of turf steps belonging to grand houses, and the less formal gardens of 'Lesser Country Houses', there are contemporary gardens by Lutyens and Gertrude Jekyll.
